Naomi Wangui Theuri har i flera års tid försökt att försörja sig som frilansjournalist i Kenya. Med höjd presskortsavgift, stora svårigheter att få regeringskritiska artiklar publicerade och hotet om en ny medielag som begränsar pressfriheten ytterligare har hon nu gett upp på yrket.
Livet som journalist i Kenya blir allt svårare, menar frilansjournalisten Naomi Wangui Theuri som verkar i landet. Medan journalister på de statliga medieföretagen får presskort som gäller livet ut, måste övriga journalister förnya sitt presskort varje år, berättar hon.
– I år har avgiften för presskorten höjts med 400 procent och det är framför allt frilansjournalister som drabbas, eftersom de måste stå för sina presskort själva och har svårare att pruta ned summan. Man behöver dessutom en skriven rekommendation av en godkänd redaktör som berättar vad frilansjournalisten har skrivit om tidigare.
Huvudstaden Nairobi huserar cirka 90 procent av alla mediehus i Kenya. Kenya Broadcast Cooperation, KBC, som är direkt ägd av regeringen, innefattar idag en tv-kanal och ett fåtal radiostationer, men inga tryckta medier, säger hon.
– KBC sänder bara regeringsvänligt material och trots att majoriteten av landets journalister jobbar för privatägda mediehus står deras ägare ofta väldigt nära politikerna. Det gör det nästan omöjligt att kritisera politiken även där.
Ett annat problem är att journalister som blir inbjudna till politikernas mer eller mindre officiella möten med befolkningen riskerar att hamna i politikernas knän, berättar Naomi Wangui Theuri.
– Här är det vanligt att man som journalist får en viss ekonomisk ersättning för sina omkostnader. Det gör naturligtvis att man kanske inte lyssnar lika kritiskt eller senare undviker att skriva om de klagomål som framförs på mötena.
Många journalister som trodde att den nya regeringen som tillträdde 2002 skulle bidra till ökad pressfrihet är idag besvikna, säger hon.
– Istället lades ett förslag till en ny medielag som innebär en stor inskränkning av den fria journalistiken. På grund av den internationella kritiken har den dock inte blivit gällande än.
Själv gick Naomi Wangui Theuri en ettårig journalistutbildning på en av Kenyas privatskolor, men efter två år i branschen har hon nu beslutat sig för att plugga vidare. I höst flyttar hon till Malmö med för att läsa internationella relationer.
– Jag hoppas att det blir bra. Journalistyrket har varit ganska stressigt, eftersom mina artiklar ibland ansetts vara för kritiska. Om man skriver kritiskt vill ingen publicera och då tjänar man inga pengar.
